Hit and Miss : SIRIUS Sportster 4 Satellite Radio Receiver with Car Kit

Eager to get it, I finally ordered the new Sportster 4 online. It didn't take long for me to be profoundly disappointed in the unit.

The problem is with the Sportster's FM converter: It's essentially worthless. I was unable to find a single frequency that wasn't subject to some sort of interference. Even the frequencies I use with the Starmate Replay were picking up static and/or bursts of music from elsewhere. In fact, at the lower end of the FM spectrum (the 88's and 89's) I got nothing. Zip. Nada. Even on the completely blank frequencies there was just nothing there. Finally around the 90.1 range you would be able to make out whichever channel you were trying to listen to. The upper frequencies were "listenable," provided you were willing to put up with the interference.

I finally decided to hook up the old Starmate again and put the units through a head-to-head competition. I set both receivers to the same FM frequency and the Starmate consistently overpowered the FM transmitter from the Sportster. I've actually tried the same experiment before, between the Starmate and an XM unit, and the result should be one signal or another getting through, but with a lot of interference. The bottom line is that the Sportster's FM converter is weak almost to the point of being non-existent.

I don't know what effect using a direct connect FM modulator would have on this shortcoming.

The second problem is that the power and antenna cables connect directly to the back of the cradle, NOT the sides. The end result is that the back of the radio is no longer a smooth surface, and you can no longer simply velcro the unit to the dashboard. It does come with that annoying standard-issue suction cup mount or a vent mount. I'm not a big fan of either mounting method, however.

On the plus side: If you are able to playback with either a cassette adapter or a direct connect cable, you will like the Sportster 4. It's a beautifully sleek looking unit and the various controls are laid out well. The blue backlight is just a bit weak during the day, but unobtrusive at night.

Buying additional cradles--whether for the house or other cars--makes moving the radio from one location to another a snap since you don't have to deal with connecting and disconnecting various cables.

A keeper even with one flaw : JVC KW-XR810 4 x 50 Watts Dual USB/CD Receiver

Installed in 2005 Nissan Frontier. Manufacturer's dimensions are with included bracket; otherwise head unit without the bracket is true Dd size. Used (needed) Metra Dd trim for install, and also a harness kit from whomever. Kw-Xr810 unit itself works as advertised. Can payment and operate both my Iphone 3Gs and Ipod Nano (3rd & 4th Gen) from the head unit. Most other facts can be obtained from the user's manual, which can be downloaded. My one issue with this unit is the text scrolling. When the song title (mp3 in my case since I don't have the Hd Radio or use other formats) exceeds the displayed width then the unit will scroll the song title. If you have your display set to black background with white (or other color) text, then when it begins to scroll it scrolls with very pixelated white text. This causes the scrolling text to be unreadable when viewing it from the driver's seat. When viewed directly in front, it's readable but just barely. There are alternatives. You can leave the display to have white background and black lettering 24/7 (nuisance for nighttime driving) or turn scrolling off. The advertisement photos of this unit have the display with black background. When it is set with white background then the scrolling is not an issue because the text is black all the time, and honestly looks nice, for daytime that is. Wide I like this unit and would suggest it to anyone seeing to operate the latest Iphones & Ipods. With the 2 Usb ports, I have the rear Usb going to my glove box, attached to my Ipod, and use the front when I attach my Iphone. Controls all things with the big dial and menu button. Have not used Bluetooth yet although I have attached included microphone wiring. Owned for 2 weeks now, will eventually try the Cd player some year. I set dissimilar day and night time display colors and is controlled by your car/truck lights switch.

Built-in Bluetooth Hands-free Calling and Audio Streaming

The CZ501's built-in wireless Bluetooth interface supports HSP/HFP for hands-free operation and PBAP for phonebook download. You can easily communicate with the outside world by listening to phone calls through the car's audio system and talking through the embedded microphone. And with A2DP/AVRCP support, you can enjoy music streamed from your mobile phone.

CD and WMA/MP3 Playback

Enjoy your favorite CDs or CD-R/RW discs, or burn CD-R/RWs full of MP3/WMA digital audio files for hours of playback on a single disc.

Not feeling like waiting for a disc to burn? Throw a bunch of tunes on a USB thumb drive and play back directly, using the front-panel USB input.

For your other MP3 players, or pretty much anything with a headphone output, a convenient front-panel 3.5mm auxiliary input is provided.

Beat EQ and MAGNA BASS EX for Precisely Powerful Sound

In addition to providing 3 preset equalization patterns, Beat EQ lets you customize the level and range of the bass, midrange, and treble of each pattern. In addition, MAGNA BASS EX boosts the 50Hz range, to deliver dynamic bass performance. You'll get full-range sound at any volume level.

50W x 4 MOS-FET Power Amp

CZ501 has a MOS-FET (Metal Oxide Semiconductor Field Effect Transistor) power amplifier capable of delivering 50W x 4 of high quality sound with superior linearity and less distortion than conventional power amps even with the volume cranked up.

Three 4V Preamp Outputs

If you still need a little more power, the CX501 provides three stereo pairs (six channels) of 4V RCA outputs (front, rear, subwoofer) for expanding your system, complete with high- and low-pass filters and a separate subwoofer volume.

Sirius and HD Radio Ready

The CZ501 also supports direct connection with an optional Sirius Satellite Radio tuner. The SCC1 Sirius Connect Vehicle Tuner plugs into the back of CZ501 with no adapters necessary. Enjoy high quality genre-specific programming from music and talk, to news and traffic, via direct satellite feed to your car. Similarly, you can expand your radio options by adding a Clarion HD Radio receiver.

Awesome aftermarket radio : Clarion CZ501 CD/MP3/WMA Receiver with USB and Bluetooth

I supplanted an old not so great Sony Cd receiver in order to gain a Usb and Bluetooth interface. What a great decision to go with the Clarian Cz501. I've been seeing at possibilities for months but couldn't by comparison the $. This receiver was very cheap and had all the features I was seeing for. So far I haven't played nearby with the iPod relationship bucause I put all my popular music on a consolidate of tiny 8Gb thumb drives and now there is no real need for the Cd drive though it works well. It took about five minutes initially to connect my phone to Bluetooth and it connects flawlessly to the radio within a few seconds of beginning the car and the faceplace placed microphone works quite well with no real need to add an external microphone. It even seamlessly transfers an active call to Bluetooth when I get in the car without any performance on my part. Automaticly switching the audio to the car speakers and microphone without any call disruption. I couldn't be more satisfied with this receiver and the sound is quite thorough on my 25 year old Porsche 944 premise speakers.
